One might ask: since converting a 12-hour chronograph to a 24-hour one could theoretically be achieved simply by adding a few gears and altering the gear ratio, why did Rolex go to the trouble of designing a specific "planetary gear" system? Rolex has always prioritized controlling the thickness of the Daytona and ensuring the serviceability of its movement; consequently, the 4130/4131 movements employ a unique gear train layout. Rolex positioned the entire chronograph gear train on the back of the movement (the assembly side)—including the 12-hour chronograph gear—resulting in an exceptionally compact design. In contrast, typical chronograph movements place the hour-recording gear on the dial side (driven directly by the mainspring barrel); while this design is simpler, it falls short of the Rolex Daytona in terms of movement thickness and ease of maintenance. However, this "ingenious design" presents one specific challenge: there is absolutely no extra space to accommodate even a single additional gear.
As you can see, the fake Rolex Daytona features a compact 40mm case and a thickness of just 12.2mm (with 100-meter water resistance)—setting a benchmark that is virtually unsurpassed among sports chronographs.
